ABOUT ME
Carrie Allison, Teacher
I am Carrie Allison. I graduated from the College of William and Mary with a Bachelor's of Arts in Elementary Education. I am certified in Virginia to teach PreK through 8th grade. I have several years of experience teaching middle school, but my passion and the most recent twenty years of my career have been in Kindergarten. My favorite thing is watching little ones learn to read and write and seeing their excitement about literacy. I am looking forward to using my experience to begin this new chapter of teaching. I know the importance of small teacher:student ratios, and feel that I can provide a wonderful environment for learning in which children have a peer group but are still able to have the teacher attention that is so crucial. My program is ideal for homeschool families or those who may want to postpone formal school for another year.
MY PROGRAM
Students aged five or six are ideal for this program. Homeschooled children can attend as their primary literacy instruction or as a supplement to a curriculum being implemented at home. Children who just miss the age cutoff for public school but who are academically and emotionally ready for more than another year of preschool would also benefit. Areas of focus will be phonemic awareness, letters and sounds, prereading and reading skills, comprehension, and writing, all done with an emphasis on phonics. The Virginia Standards of Learning will guide instruction. While our day will be shorter than a traditional school day, with a small group, we will accomplish a lot in the time we have. Children enrolling should be ready to attend to small group instruction and follow directions for a two hour period, should be comfortable separating from parents, and should have the necessary self-help skills (i.e. restroom, etc.)
